An Explanation…

You will have noticed that I have not made a single post since the 10th of June. Given that I have a pretty good following happening I felt I owed you all an explanation as to why I have stopped posting.

A few days prior to the opening weekend I started a new job. It’s a job that I have been wanting for many years and it’s very important to me. It’s fantastic and I love it, but the only unfortunate thing is that the job does not mix well with an independent blog of this kind.

I quite simply will not be able to write this blog as long as I am doing the job that I am doing. As much as I hate to say it, this is truly the end.

It saddens me a little because I had some big plans for the blog, plans that would have seen it graduate from a little, simple blog, to a proper site with multiple contributors and a much more social aspect (no, not another snow forum). I think it would have been great and a lot of fun, but now my priorities have changed and I’ve shifted my goal posts.

The site will stay up so you can enjoy reading or looking at my photos for a while yet. Just don’t expect any new content.

Thanks for reading and thanks to the regulars who commented, liked and retweeted my posts. Enjoy the rest of the winter, it’s shaping up to be a big one!

So.. This Winter Thing..

I just wanted to let you know that unfortunately I’ll be living up to my blog title and only posting irregularly for a while. With winter kicking off my workload has gone into overdrive and I just won’t have the time to take decent photos or post a regular report.

If you aren’t already, follow me on Twitter for more regular photos and tidbits.

Have a good long weekend!

Thredbo Opening Weekend

Quick post – lots of snow falling right now, lots of snow being made.

I think it’s likely Thredbo will have Friday Flat, High Noon and Merritts running this weekend. Depending on the natural snowfall the Supertrail might be a goer too.

So come on down and get some early season turns in on what could well be the best opening weekend since the mighty year 2000.

Big Night Of Snowmaking

Temps at Perisher and Thredbo got down to around -4c earlier this morning and they have stayed low and this has allowed the resorts to have a pretty decent night of snowmaking. They’re still at it, so I’ve saved a few of the cams from Perisher because they show the snowmaking well. The best Thredbo cams are either facing the wrong direction at the moment or frozen over, which is usually a sign of a good night blasting snow.

The forecast for this week is looking for some low level snow too. Not huge amounts, but enough that combined with the snowmaking we should be looking at a great opening weekend in 2011.

Snow Forecast For Next Week

There seems to have been a perception amongst casual snow goers that there’s heaps of snow already and that Perisher is open. That’s not true, on both counts – one look at the cams would tell them this – but I guess not everyone looks at the cams. So with 11 days to go before opening weekend and very little snow anywhere it’s good to finally see the potential for a big dump showing in the forecasts. It’s looking good for light snow on Saturday then a fairly good sized dump starting Sunday and running for at least a few days. It could be a great season starter that will allow the resorts to make snow as well and really build a decent base for skiing from day 1 of the 2011 season.

Over at Snowatch Frog is being fairly cautious in terms of totals and freeze levels. The Weather Chaser’s Falls Creek & Hotham forecast is also being fairly cautious but it’s Weatherzone who is most bullish about this system at the moment – calling for anywhere up to 65cm to fall between this coming Friday and the following Thursday. To quite low levels as well – 1000m on Sunday and 800m on Monday and Tuesday.

At the moment I think it will be somewhere between what Frog and Weatherzone are predicting. I’m thinking a dusting Friday and Saturday and around 20cm in total Sunday and Monday.

I hope I’m wrong – I’d love to see a 50cm natural base on the opening weekend!

And, in case you missed it, make sure you watch this awesome video of Simon Dumont hitting a “cubed pipe” at Squaw – he’s got big balls and the skills to back them up, this guy
